About Hancock
Hancock Day School (HDS) serves pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade students with a challenging curriculum and early emphasis on reading and phonics skills. Small classes in a structured and caring environment prepare students for success in learning and life.
Hancock was founded in 1953 by Mrs. Emmie Ruth Bell Hancock to establish a school where children could reach their full potential. The school opened with a kindergarten and first grade and grew rapidly. When Mrs. Hancock retired, her son, William Bell, and his wife, Doris Bell, managed the school until their retirement in 2004. Upon announcing their retirement and planned school closing, Hancock’s parents formed Parents and Friends of Hancock, Inc., a 501(c)3 4 organization, to keep Hancock open. In 2007, Hancock relocated to the current campus on Howard Foss Drive.
Our Articles of Incorporation state that “The corporation's purpose and curriculum shall be premised on (a) Judeo-Christian principles, (b) a fundamental education in the areas of reading, writing, and arithmetic, science and the arts, and (c) the emphasis of moral character and integrity in its students, faculty, and staff.“
Hancock Day School holds accreditation through the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS). SAIS ensures that schools meet or exceed comprehensive standards and are engaged in an authentic school improvement process. Being fully accredited means our school meets all SAIS standards, indicators, and guidelines. Hancock Day School is also a member of the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) and the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS).
