Academics
Message from Our Academic Dean
At Hancock Day School (HDS), we are committed to providing an education that nurtures and develops the whole child. This involves equipping students through high standards and rigorous coursework, while intentionally balancing these demands with participation in sports and extracurricular activities. Our academic approach is designed to foster curiosity, utilizing inquiry-based science lessons rooted in STEAM and supported by effective literacy instruction through Orton-Gillingham methodologies and strategies for spelling, alongside a deep understanding of mathematics established through Singapore Math. Recognizing that sustained learning requires balance, we prioritize the overall well-being of our students by integrating brain breaks to reduce learning fatigue; this is accomplished through specialist classes like Physical Education, a snack break, and recess, PK-8th grade, allowing students to reset. We hold ourselves accountable to our high expectations by using ERB as a valuable third-party metric to measure our students' progress against other independent school norms. Ultimately, our dedicated staff holds every student accountable for reaching their full potential in a supportive yet challenging environment.
Sincerely,
Kristen Kreutner
Academic Dean and Head of Lower School
