History of Hancock Day School

Hancock Day School, located in Savannah, GA, was founded in 1953 by Mrs. Emmie Ruth Hancock.  An experienced elementary school teacher and a certified Director of Christian Education, Mrs. Hancock developed the idea for the school while teaching a leadership course to kindergarten teachers.  Her objective was to establish a school where each student could develop to the full realization of his or her potential.

The school began its private educational program with only kindergarten and first grade classes.  Then in 1960, the campus on Skidaway Road expanded to include all elementary school grades.  During this time, Mrs. Hancock’s son, William Bell came to work at the school after leaving his position at Abraham Baldwin College.  Shortly after Mr. Bell joined the faculty, his wife Doris Bell came on board and later served as Director of Curriculum for over 40 years.

In the 1970’s, Hancock expanded even further by creating Hancock Academy, a high school located on Derenne Avenue.  Within a few years Hancock Academy awarded high school diplomas to the graduating classes of 1978 and 1979.  However, in 1980, the administration decided to close Hancock Academy and concentrate its efforts on the lower grade levels.

The Bells’ continued to operate the school until they retired in 2004.  With their retirement, they announced plans to close the school.  However, a group of parents in Savannah quickly petitioned to keep the school open.  They formed a non-profit organization, Parents and Friends of Hancock, Inc., and thereby ensured the continued operation of this fine school.  Mrs. Bell currently serves on the Board of Trustees, advising and offering valuable support.  Mr. Bell passed away in August 2007.

Today, Hancock Day School in Savannah is a private school serving pre-kindergarten through 7th grade at its new campus on Howard Foss Drive.  It is proud to add 8th grade in 2010.  SAIS/SACS accreditation was accomplished in May 2009.  Hancock is regarded highly for its traditional curriculum with an early emphasis on reading and learning skills.  Small classes in a structured and caring environment prepare students successfully for high school and beyond.

The purpose of Hancock Day School is to provide every student with the values, knowledge and skills to achieve full potential.  Faculty and administration strive to develop independent self-reliant, life-long learners by establishing high standards.

A strong liaison with families ensures that students are prepared academically, spiritually and emotionally for full and meaningful lives.
