Middle School Student Life

At Hancock, we are aware that often important life lessons are learned during the middle school years.  Therefore, Hancock seeks to provide our students with opportunities to engage in activities, which foster an appreciation of the values that extend beyond school.

  • The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is a national organization that seeks to impress upon young people the value of competing in a manner that emphasizes respect for opponents as well as instilling in every athlete the importance of sportsmanship.
  • The Student Council encourages student input when forming school policy and provides an opportunity for students to use leadership skills that apply to everyday life.
  • The Eagle Times is a student published newspaper that brings about a reflective analysis of students’ beliefs about the school.  The paper helps students develop writing skills, and allows students the opportunity to meet deadlines and participate in the actual publication process.
  • The Junior Beta Club recognizes those students who achieve above and beyond the required academic expectations.  Induction into this prestigious group is a symbol of excellence, which requires those honored to engage in various community service projects and leadership activities.
  • The Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP) seeks to recognize students who show signs of continued academic excellence.  It allows these students to practice test taking skills at an early age, which will prove beneficial when taking standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT.

Community Service

Above the entrance of Hancock Day School is a wooden plaque that reads, “Mind Your Manners.”  As a private school, we have always prided ourselves on training students to become honest and trustworthy individuals.  Citizenship and respect for others are two of the many character traits that Hancock instills in our students. As part of this goal, each class plans and executes a community service project each year.  The entire school also participates in several community service projects such as Jump Rope for Heart, the Backus Pediatric Center, the Ronald McDonald House, and the First Harvest Food Bank.
